We care about Our River

Tuesday, 26 August 2014

Last year when developing the Our River Masterplan, the community reaffirmed that the Penrith stretch of the Nepean River is a defining feature of the City.

A Vegetation Management Plan (VMP) has now been developed to both protect the foreshore and its biodiversity, while also opening up views over the river in some places.

The Plans of Management for Tench Reserve, River Road Reserve and Weir Reserve have also been combined and updated.

"It's important we look at the entire precinct and the Our River Masterplan and these more detailed plans enable us to do that. Identifying what needs to be done to manage the vegetation and natural environment is a vital element in protecting the waterway and overall health of the river area," Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said.

"The Nepean River is Penrith's best asset and I'm confident this plan strikes the right balance between maintaining the health of the river and its banks while exposing the beautiful river vistas."

Council is keen to increase community involvement in managing the River area.

"Residents and river visitors are very passionate about this area of our City and the VMP sets a framework for how the community can become more involved and aware of the unique challenges we face in balancing improved habitat and public amenity and access," Cr Fowler said.
