Free microchipping day for Penrith cats and dogs

Monday, 17 April 2023

Pets are important members of the family who require a different kind of care to their human family. That's why Penrith City Council’s excited to announce the return of its free Microchipping Day!

Penrith residents are invited to come down to Ridge Park Hall in Oxley Park on Saturday 22 April 2023 between 9am and 12pm to have their cat or dog microchipped.

If you have any questions about your pet’s care, you can ask Council’s friendly Animal Services officers or the team members from RSPCA, Greencross Vets, Animal Welfare League and the Cat Protection Society who will be there to provide free health checks and advice on the day.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen was excited for the event’s return, especially after its previous cancellations due to the pandemic.

“Our Animal Services Officers are thrilled to bring back the beloved Microchipping Day event,” Cr Hitchen said.

“Microchipping keeps pets safe and is vital to ensuring pets can be identified by Council, vets and animal shelters if they are lost.

“It’s wonderful to see our annual microchipping event return this year. I know the pandemic inspired lots of people to welcome new pets into their homes, and I encourage all pet owners in Penrith to take advantage of this opportunity to get their dog or cat microchipped for free,” she said.

If you have a pet that’s microchipped, it’s important to check your details are up to date. Moving to a new house or state, changing phone numbers, and rehoming a pet are all important reasons to update your pet’s microchip details. The easiest way to update this information is online at

If you can’t make it on the day, visit your local vet to microchip your pet. If you aren’t sure whether your pet has been microchipped, your vet or Council’s Animal Services can scan your pet.

In NSW, all dogs and cats must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before they are adopted, sold or given away, and must be lifetime registered by 6 months of age. A discount registration fee is available if your cat is desexed by four months of age and dogs are desexed by six months of age. More information is available at
