Join Penrith City Council at our free community event on Monday 3 December to celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

International Day of People with Disability celebrates the achievements and contributions of people with disability, and how this enriches our community and culture. It also aims to break down the barriers of disability, and celebrate abilities of all kinds.

Our event is part of a global event established by the United Nations that raises awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability around the world.

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler OAM said this is very important day in our calendar, as it allows us to think, talk about, and acknowledge people with disability in a positive way.

"One in five Australians have a disability, so this is an issue and a conversation that is tremendously important for our community.

"This event is the perfect opportunity to have a conversation about what we can do - as individuals, and as a community, to create a more inclusive Australia," Cr Fowler continued.

"Gerrard Gosens OAM, who is the event patron this year, said he lives by the philosophy that success is a journey, not a destination.

"In spite of being totally blind from birth, Gerrard has accomplished a lot, as an adventurer, three-time Paralympian, long-distance runner, Project Manager, Chocolatier and motivational speaker, as well as appearing on Australia's "Dancing with the Stars" TV show.

"Gerrard's philosophy really captures the spirit of IDPwD: breaking down assumptions and barriers by celebrating the contributions of people with disability, and building a more inclusive community for all," Cr Fowler said.

Join us at the Mondo greenspace (between the Joan and Westfield) between 9.30am - 12.30pm to enjoy entertainment, hands on workshops including dance, music, tie-dye, and cake decorating. You'll also get to throw a footy around!

The event is free and open to all, and promises to be a great day out. The event will also be accessible, but if you have any specific needs, please contact our Disability Inclusion Officer on 02 4732 8081.

Come along to enjoy the celebrations and join the conversation.
