Council and local community members came together to celebrate the opening of Cook Park Playground in St Marys on Friday 17 May.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM was on hand to officially launch the new playground, which was designed by young leaders from St Marys Public School as part of Council’s 2018 Penrith Mayoral Challenge project.

“This project shows how fantastic our young people are at designing places that everyone can enjoy. I am delighted by the leadership skills this group of students have demonstrated. They have made decisions with their community in mind and brought this project to life,” Cr Fowler said.

The Penrith Mayoral Challenge program is led by Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal team who work with local young people to design and build new playgrounds.

The Challenge focuses on building leadership, inclusive design, and engaging local community members. The program has been running for 5 years and has demonstrated that involving young people in the design of public spaces can have great outcomes.
