WSU ranked in the top 20 of world’s universities for social, ecological and economic impact

Western Sydney University has been recognised for its success in reducing inequality and promotion of gender equality in a recently released report.

The results come from Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which assessed over 1,200 universities globally against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The University, with a large campus in The Quarter Penrith, scored 17th overall, putting it in the top 1.5% of universities worldwide.

The University’s performance in the UN’s goals for gender equality (3rd), reduced inequalities (5th) and responsible consumption and production (10th) were key contributors to the University’s positive result. Ranking third in the world for gender equality reflects the institution’s policies on gender equality, commitment to recruiting and promoting women, and research on the study of gender equality.

Western Sydney University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover AO, remarked; “The University community should be justifiably proud of these latest Impact Rankings, particularly the global recognition for our sector-leading work to promote gender equality, tackle inequalities and improve access to education, and address issues of sustainability and climate change.”

“Through our innovative teaching curriculum, we are also helping shape our students’ capacity to succeed and make a positive contribution to their community and the world – inspiring them to be our next generation of thought leaders and civic-minded global citizens.”

Australia’s overall performance in the rankings drew attention from the report’s author, with Times Higher Education noting “Australia’s higher education system shines through as a world leader in sustainability”.
