Mayoral Column – Planning Penrith’s next steps

Mayoral Column – Planning Penrith’s next steps

Wednesday, 3 June 2026

As our City continues to grow and evolve, Penrith City Council is focused on planning to reflect the true needs and aspirations of the community.

There are many considerations in setting Penrith up for a thriving future. Council’s priorities include creating local jobs along with homes, delivering and maintaining community infrastructure for our growing population, and keeping the rich character of our more established suburbs.

As we do this, your input is embedded in Council’s decision-making processes, and I thank the community for sharing your thoughts and expectations with us.

Our shared goals led to the visionary St Marys Town Centre Master Plan. Approved earlier this year, this strategic 20-year plan will transform St Marys, enabling around 9,300 new homes and more than 8,300 new jobs.

We’ll start work on the significant central park project this year. It’ll be the green heart of St Marys, drawing even more investment and helping to bring our vision to life.

We are taking the same evidence-based, place-based approach to planning the Kingswood-Werrington precinct – the corridor anchored by St Marys and Penrith.

It is a hub for major medical and educational facilities, including Nepean Hospital and private practices, as well as Western Sydney University and TAFE.

With the City’s population expected to grow by 54,000 people from 2021 to 2041, Kingswood and Werrington are well-placed to attract new energy, people and investment and evolve into more vibrant places within Penrith’s East-West Corridor.

Last year we asked for your insights and these have helped to shape the draft plans, which are now on public exhibition.

Council’s Draft Kingswood-Werrington Structure Plan sets a vision to guide the area’s growth over the next 20 years. The Draft Kingswood-Werrington Place Plan outlines practical actions to improve safety and make these areas more welcoming.

It’s an exciting time for this City and I invite you to read these plans and share your feedback by 26 June.

View the plans at yoursaypenrith.com.au/kwcplan or access hard copies at the Civic Centre and our Penrith and St Marys libraries.
