Glossop St rail bridge closed to heavy vehicles over 20T

Saturday, 30 May 2026

A bridge owned and managed by Sydney Trains at Glossop St, St Marys, has been closed to all vehicles over 20 tonnes due to safety concerns.

Penrith City Council has been advised by Sydney Trains that recent inspections and detailed engineering assessments, as part of asset maintenance, identified that the rail over road bridge was unable to safely support the existing vehicle load conditions.

The 20T load limit has been implemented immediately, so further investigations can be undertaken.

Penrith Mayor Todd Carney said: “Council has installed VMS boards to alert road users of this sudden change.

“Council will continue to liaise with Sydney Trains to understand the investigations and expected timing of rectification works.

“This is a busy area and the temporary closure to heavy vehicles will have a significant impact on both freight and local traffic networks.

“We’re also seeking assurance from Sydney Trains that any rectification works will be completed as soon as possible.”

Sydney Trains are continuing their investigations of the bridge over the Western Railway line and will work with Council to manage the immediate impacts and support a review of temporary alternate heavy vehicle routes.
