Mayoral Column – Look out for one another this festive season

Wednesday, 17 December 2025

What an incredible and transformative year we’ve had in Penrith.

It has been heartwarming to see you all come together for events including our flagship Real Festival, enjoying completed projects like the pedestrian pathway at Nepean Avenue, celebrating diversity at our citizenship ceremonies, and exploring our bustling city centres.

These moments of connection show that community spirit is strong and something to be proud of in this City – and I encourage you to hold onto that this festive season.

While this is a special period of reflection and celebration for many, it is also a time when some people are struggling. We are a community that cares so please look out for one another – lend a hand and don’t hesitate to ask for support.

If you or someone you know needs help, there are many local services that provide meals and material aid at this time. Council has compiled a list that you can access at penrith.city/christmassupport.

Stay safe on our roads and look after your health too – keep cool, stay hydrated and check in on neighbours and pets on hot days.

If you’re cooling off in the water, swim between the flags at the beach, wear a hat and sunscreen, and check that backyard pools are compliant. Children must be supervised by an adult in and around water. Read the safety rules at penrith.city/pools.

As we generate more waste than usual at this time of year, Council is providing two weeks of extra kerbside bin collections, recycling drop-off days and a real Christmas tree drop-off day. Go to penrith.city/christmaswaste for details.

The Civic Centre, our St Marys office and Penrith City Library’s three branches will close at 4pm Wednesday 24 December and re-open on Friday 2 January 2026. Residents can still access our Online Services Portal at my.penrith.city.

Council wishes our community a safe and restful break. From my family to yours, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to sharing more exciting news with you in 2026.

Cr Todd Carney
Mayor of Penrith
