Overview
Transforming the City of Penrith into a sustainable city will require cooperation
between various levels of government, resource managers, the business sector,
community groups and all citizens. The collective and individual contributions
from each of these groups are essential in achieving a common purpose.
Improving the sustainability of Penrith will not only benefit the local community,
but will also contribute significantly to improving the wellbeing of people
around the world.
Over previous years there have been many attempts made to identify
what the components of a sustainable city are, right across the world.
In 2003, Penrith City Council decided to adopt the United Nations
Environment Program's Melbourne Principles for Sustainable Cities to help
guide our journey towards sustainability. These principles are known as
the UNEP Principles and are intended as a guide for Cities in diverse nations
around the world to develop sustainable solutions that are relevant to
their own particular circumstances.
They provide a simple set of statements on how a Sustainable City
would function and a foundation for Council and its communities to work
together to achieve that.
Council has adopted the principles to help guide our thinking,
and so that they can be applied in the day to day decision making and operations
of Council as we work towards the long term sustainbility of the City as
a whole.
