Why use this indicator?Business and society are interdependent. The wellbeing of one depends on the wellbeing of the other. Companies engaged in CSR, Sustainability Reporting and Fair Trade are recognised as being committed to continual improvement, based on accountability, transparency and ethical conduct. CSR is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large. Sustainability Reporting is a process for publicly disclosing an organisation's economic, environmental, and social performance. Fair Trade is a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing rights of, marginalised producers and workers - especially in low-income regions. Participation in Fair Trade Communities helps institutions meet corporate and social responsibility goals. It helps build awareness among consumers of inequalities in international trade and empower people to make socially responsible choices, as well as providing a higher standard of living for disadvantaged producers in developing countries. What is the current situation?Council ceased reporting against this indicator in 2010. What is the desired trend? An increasing number of organisations engaging in CSR, Sustainability Reporting and committing to Fair Trade or similar. What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?Organisations are uniquely placed to contribute socially, economically and environmentally to the community. Increasing the number of organisations committed to CSR, Sustainability Reporting and Fair Trade will highlight the City as a leader in sustainable economic development and contribute positively to the community at a local and regional scale.
