Sustainability Indicators

Principle 9:

Promote sustainable production and consumption, through appropriate use of environmentally sound technologies and effective demand management.

Objective:

We encourage sustainable production, and embrace environmental sound technologies

Indicator PC26:

Proportion of households and businesses who are more sustainable, including using recycled water, green power, and recycling waste.

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Environmentally sound technologies improve environmental performance. These technologies protect the environment, are less polluting, use resources in a sustainable manner, recycle more of their wastes and products and handle all residual wastes in a more environmentally acceptable way than the technologies for which they are substitutes.

Environmentally sound technologies can also be used to drive reduced impacts and enhance value along a supply chain and support businesses embracing product stewardship.

The use of processes such as green power, recycling water via grey water reuse or rainwater tanks and recycling waste are relatively simple practices that support sustainable consumption and can be implemented reasonably easily in homes and businesses.

What is the current situation?

Data is not yet available for businesses, but is reported for households.

Residents' use of several types of environmentally sound and demand management technologies was a component of the Strategic Community Survey in June 2008.

Survey results indicate that:

  • 83.0% of residents use energy saving light globes and other similar devices in their home.
  • 35.8% of respondents indicated that they either compost or use garden waste.
  • 17.6% of respondents reported that they had a water tank and
  • 15.2% used solar or 'green' power.

One in 10 residents reported that they did not use any of these measures in their home.

In 2007-2008, the target of >18% recyclables diverted to landfill was exceeded and has been increased in 2008-2009.

As this is the first time Council has reported on this Indicator, trend data is not available.

Through its Sustainability Education and Waste Education programs, Council seeks to promote the use of environmentally sound technologies and demand management to residents, groups and businesses. This includes promotion of available rebates and incentives. Resource recovery and reuse is a particular emphasis. The Sustainability Street program facilitates and helps build capability at the grassroots community level in regard to energy, water and waste actions.

What is the desired trend?

An increase in the number of homes and businesses who are supported by Council in using sustainable technologies.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?

The use of sustainable products and services will minimise the impact on the environment, particularly on limited natural resources.
