One of the measures of a sustainable community is the extent to which residents actively participate in community organisations. This indicator is intended to measure active participation and engagement including as a volunteer, committee member or organiser of a community group’s activities.

What is the current situation?

  • 31% of residents acted as a volunteer in a community based activity,
  • 20% of residents had been a member on a committee and
  • 16% had been part of or an organiser of a local community group.

Trend data is not yet available for this Indicator.

Each year Council undertakes a wide range of social planning and community development activities to support the operation of community based organisations and groups. This includes through supporting a volunteer management committee network as well as providing small grants to local community organisations. Council works in partnership with other levels of government; community development projects and other community services to plan, promote and support activities and initiatives to meet the needs of communities across the Penrith Local Government Area.

What is the desired trend?

The desired trend is an increase in the proportion of residents surveyed who are active in community organisations.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?

The sustainability of a city is enhanced when its citizens actively participate in volunteering or contributing to the capacity of local community organisations and groups.
