Indicator PC21:

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Participation and interaction within local neighbourhoods and beyond engenders a sense of place and a strong sense of ownership which can assist in establishing a robust, cohesive community.

Communities which interact and are proud of their area are more likely to be participative, becoming more socially responsible and respectful of the environment within which they live and work.

A reduction in the level of interaction can impact on visual amenity, social stress and crime rates of an area and have wider social implications in regards to reducing the feeling of isolation and displacement.

Increasing the sense of community will help to establish a vibrant, enthusiastic community which is aware of and proud of its history, and committed to and positive about its future.

This indicator will allow Council to identify areas where Council may need to take further action to increase the sense of community within local neighbourhoods and more broadly across the City.

What is the current situation?

Council is not yet reporting on this Indicator.

What is the desired trend?

An increase in the number of people who feel a sense of community within the City and their neighbourhood.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?

An increase in the sense of community may lead to an increase in participation rates, improved amenity of an area and enhanced social wellbeing.
