2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Participation in sporting and recreational activities is a key indicator of the health and well-being of communities.

Being active is vital for both the health of individuals and for the social and physical well-being of the community as a whole. Participation in sporting and recreational activities promotes improved health, social interaction, and provides relief from daily stress.

Use of this indicator will assist in developing an understanding of how active the community is, and is a means of measuring community well-being.

What is the current situation?

Resident participation has been reviewed in the Strategic Community Survey as:

  • 80.4% of residents participate in informal passive recreation,
  • 60.1% of residents participate in informal active recreation and
  • 35.1% of residents participate in organised sports

In most instances participation was cited as weekly and in the Penrith City area.

Results in 2008 indicate increased levels of participation in all categories:

Proportion of Residents Participating in Sporting and Recreational Activities

Proportion of Residents Participating in Sporting and Recreational Activities

Council plans and provides a range of active and passive recreation and sporting facilities and lobbies other levels of Government for the additional facilities. Council is developing a new Health Strategy for the City which is holistic and responds to contemporary challenges of supporting well communities. This recognises the importance of participation in sporting and recreational activities.

What is the desired trend?

An increase in the proportion of residents participating in sporting and recreational activities and events.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?

An active community promotes improved health and well being and provides relief from daily stress. This improves personal sustainability and reduced rates of illness (e.g. time away from work) caused by inactivity.

Providing a range of sporting and recreational facilities improves the amenity and liveability of an area and enhances the sustainability of the City.
