Indicator PC17:

Level of usage of community facilities.

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Providing opportunities for community members to interact can assist in developing strong participative communities. To be effective, neighbourhood facilities need to cater to a range of age groups and interests.

Providing these facilities and opportunities can encourage community members to become involved, and reduce any sense of isolation. It can also provide opportunity for lower income families to participate in events and activities that may otherwise be too costly.

Council needs to ensure the needs of the community are recognised in the provision of facilities and services.

What is the current situation?

During the 2007-2008 financial year approximately 12,800 activities were held in Council's neighbourhood facilities with approximately 400,000 participants.

The method for calculating this indicator has been modified so a trend is not yet able to be established.

Usage of Council neighbourhood facilities is increasing due to the improved amenity of many of our facilities which have remained affordable and accessible.

What is the desired trend?

Council has defined targets for optimum use of its neighbourhood centres and community halls. This target is a total number of 28 500 events.

Target numbers for library visitors was 650 000.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?

Increased usage of facilities will indicate greater involvement within the community and suggests the needs of the community are being met.
