Sustainability Indicators

Principle 5:

Build on the characteristics of ecosystems in the development and nurturing of a healthy and sustainable City

Objective:

Our Built Environment Supports Healthy Communities

Indicator PC15:

Proportion of people who feel safe in their community

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

The safety, or perceived safety, of an individual is an important factor in the wellbeing of a community. An individual that feels secure is likely to be more participative and engage with their neighbour’s and the broader community. The community itself then becomes more cohesive and effective.

What is the current situation?

According to the 2008 Strategic Community Survey, 77% of residents strongly agree that they feel safe moving around their neighbourhood during the day. However, only 36% of residents felt the same level of safety at night.

As the first report on this Indicator, trend data is not available.

The Penrith Valley Community Safety Partnership brings together Council, Police and Community representatives, to prepare and monitor a Community Safety Plan. Wide ranging consultations and a full evaluation of the previous Plan were held to prepare the Penrith Valley Community Safety Plan for 2007- 2010, which is now being implemented.

What is the desired trend?

An increase in the number of people who feel safe and are contributing to the well being of others by reporting all levels of crime.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?

Generally, although some crime categories peak at various time (seasonal or contributing factors), the overall crime rates are either stable or trending downwards. Malicious damage is the one category that continues to trend upwards. This can in part be attributed to local programs such as the “Report It Don’t Ignore It” project where people are encouraged to report all crime, particularly minor crime (including graffiti).

The Penrith Valley Community Safety Partnership continues to meet on a regular basis to develop programs and actions to address the key priority areas of the community safety plan.
