Why use this indicator? As our population grows, the use of private vehicles as the key mode of transport is increasing, as is the number and the length of trips. This is contributing significantly to consumption of natural resources, and an increase in air pollution and related health implications. If people are to use public transport, it needs to be affordable, accessible and efficient. The current system is not meeting the needs of the community and improvement and expansion of the system is required. This is the direct responsibility of the State Government. In particular improved transport links and network of routes, more frequent, reliable and safe services and improved facilities such as carparking are required. Importantly, public transport needs to be considered holistically rather than each mode of transport viewed in isolation. The State Government need to provide strategic, integrated transport solutions in conjunction with decisions regarding land use planning, particularly for new urban release areas. Council has a role in lobbying and facilitating State Government to provide affordable and efficient transport services, and facilitating agreed actions. Council also has a role in improving access to public transport through encouraging appropriate urban design and provision of walking and cycling tracks. Increasing the use of public transport should assist in providing for improvement in the air quality and a reduction in consumption of fossil fuels. However, to achieve an increase in public transport use, substantial improvements to the public transport system is required. What is the current situation?Data for this indicator has not yet been collated. What is the desired trend? An increase in the number of residents using public transport. What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith City?Increased public transport use will require improvements to the current public
transport system and a shift in attitudes and perceptions regarding the
effectiveness of the system. An increase in public transport will reduce
the number of cars on the road thereby assisting to reduce consumption
of fossil fuels and minimise air pollution. There are also potential economic
benefits for residents in reducing the need for private vehicles.
