Why use this indicator? Health and safety performance is a key measure of an organisation’s duty of care.
Low injury and absentee rates are generally linked to positive trends in staff
morale and productivity. This indicator will show whether health and safety
management practices are resulting in fewer OH&S incidents.
What is the current situation?
83 injuries occurred and 898 days were lost. Council has had 0 fatalities.
The total number of worker's compensation claims has steadily declined every year since 2001-2002 (113)
to the present (2007-2008 - 83 claims). The number of claims where time was lost off the job has also
decreased from 66 in 2001-2002 to 45 in 2007-2008.
Council has had no work related fatalities. Total number of days lost from injury has dropped
dramatically since 2001-2002 from 3309 to 898 days, a decrease of 73%.
Council is continually seeking ways to improve the safety of the work environment. Council employs an
OH&S and Injury Management Coordinator and support officer to provide advice and assistance to staff.
What is the desired trend?
A reduction in the number of injuries and lost days.

Providing a healthy and safe work environment is a legislated requirement and
one which Council takes seriously. Council continually looks for ways to
improve employee safety and reduce the number of workplace incidents.
