2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

A health and safety committee with appropriate representation can facilitate a positive health and safety culture. The use of committees is one way to involve workers in the improvement of workplace OH&S.

This indicator will illustrate Council’s commitment to staff participation in organisational processes and decision-making.

What is the current situation?

Council's OH&S committee comprises 14 elected staff members and 2 employees who act as advisors, giving an overall percentage of 2%.

The OH&S Committee comprises 14 employees. 9 members are elected by employees and represent the 3 key groups within Council, ie indoor, outdoor and childcare. A further 5 staff are nominated by management. Overall the Committee is made up of 64% males, 36% females. 43% of the committee is indoor staff, 36% outdoor staff and 21% childrens services.

Council maintains a consistent level of workforce representation at all times. Elections to the OH&S Committee occur every 2 years.

What is the desired trend?

All staff are represented on the OH&S Committee.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?

Providing a healthy and safe work environment is a key priority for Council, however Council management cannot provide this in isolation. Employees have a responsibility to be aware of and involved in maintaining and developing a health and safety culture. Council can encourage this through providing opportunities for staff to participate in improving OH&S in the workplace.
