Sustainability Indicators

Principle 4:

Enable communities to minimise their ecological footprint

Indicator EN3:

Direct energy consumption by primary energy source.

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Energy consumption has a direct relationship with the operating costs of the organisation. It also reflects the environmental footprint as consumption of fossil fuels is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, and energy consumption is directly linked to the organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Supporting renewable and efficient energy technology reduces the organisations current and future dependency on non renewable energy sources.

What is the current situation?

Council consumed 1,138 Kl of fuel (LPG, unleaded, diesel, E10, and Premium) and 24,997MJ of Natural Gas.

Council has increased its fuel consumption during 2007-2008.

Council is committed to reducing our fuel consumption and is looking at a range of strategies including increasing Council's fleet of Prius and encouraging car pooling and use of public transport where possible.

What is the desired trend?

A reduction in energy consumption and an increase in the support of renewable and efficient energy technology.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?

By choosing sustainable energy sources, Council can reduce its direct energy consumption which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and subsequent impacts on climate change.
