Sustainability Indicators

Principle 4:

Enable communities to minimise their ecological footprint

Indicator EN2:

Percentage of materials used that are recycled input materials.

2009/2010 Data 2008/2009 Data 2007/2008 Data 2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Using recycled materials reduces the demand for virgin materials and contributes to the conservation of the global resource base. Operating costs can also potentially be reduced through the use of recycled materials.

This indicator measures Council's use of recycled material, and provides an opportunity to track resource consumption.

What is the current situation?

Council purchased 1,860 tonnes of recycled material in 2010-11 and reused 12,000 tonnes from construction projects. Combined, this equates to 25% of Council's total material use for construction, and is 4% more recycled and reused materials compared to the previous year.

Council also received 270,000 tonnes of recycled materials from development sites across Sydney in preparing the Gipps Street site for its final intended used as playing fields.

What is the desired trend?

An increase in the quantity of recycled materials used in Council operations.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?

Recycling material reduces the demand on valuable landfill space and lowers purchasing and disposal costs to Council. It also lessens the demand on finite natural resources.

This indicator measures Council's use of recycled material, and provides an opportunity to track resource consumption.

What is the current situation?

Current annual usage of construction materials is 56,583 tonnes. Of this Council used a total of 7,108 tonnes of purchased recycled material and reused a total of 6,900 tonnes of material (24.7%) from construction projects.

The amount of recycled and reused material has increased by 6% since 2007-08.

Future trends will distinguish between purchased recycled material and material that has been reused from various council projects.

Reusing suitable material from council projects provides substantial economic and environmental benefits by reducing the need to source virgin material.

Data has only been collated for construction materials. Data collation on other consumables is required for future reports to enable a more comprehensive assessment.
