Why use this indicator? Greenhouse gas emissions are the main cause of climate change, and reducing those
emissions can improve the overall life cycle performance of products and services.
This indicator identifies Council’s initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
and measures the reductions achieved.
What is the current situation?
A number of measures were introduced in 2007-2008 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These
measures were implemented at various stages through the year, so savings from a full financial
year have not been achieved. It is anticipated these measures will provide an annual CO2 emission
reduction of 346.2 tonnes.
This indicator was incorrectly reported last year so trend information is not yet available.
Council continues to work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with its diverse
range of activities, achieving a 346.2t annual carbon dioxide emission reduction in the reporting
period. Council achieved this reduction through:
- Installation of heat pump hot water systems with an annual saving of 54.3 tonnes of CO2
- Replacement of air conditioning towers in Council's Civic Centre saving 256.8 tonnes of CO2
- Trialing heat reflective paint saving 24.9 tonnes of CO2 and
- Retrofit of lighting saving 10.2 tonnes of CO2
What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?
Greenhouse gas emissions significantly affect climate change. Reducing emissions
will mitigate this impact and highlight Council as a role model to other
organisations.
