Sustainability Indicators

Principle 4:

Enable communities to minimise their ecological footprint

Indicator EN17:

Other relevant indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight..

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Indirect greenhouse gas emissions can be a significant factor in contributing to climate change. Measuring and working to reduce indirect emissions can demonstrate leadership in combating climate change.

This indicator will measure the generation of relevant indirect greenhouse gas emissions by Council activities, and inform future actions.

What is the current situation?

Council reported on this Indicator in 2006-2007 however it was incorrectly interpreted.

Trend data for this Indicator is not yet available.

Council intends to report on this Indicator in the future however due to the significant resources required to compile information we are unable to report on the 2007-2008 period. Reporting of this indicator is optional according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative due to the significant resources required to compile information.

What is the desired trend?

A reduction in the quantity of indirect greenhouse gas emissions from Council owned facilities and services.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?

Council has a role as a consumer to reduce emissions not only for environmental and economic benefits but also in its role as a leader for other organisations. Reducing Councils indirect greenhouse gas emissions will lessen the impact on climate change and minimise the pressure on finite natural resources.
