Sustainability Indicators

Principle 4:

Enable communities to minimise their ecological footprint

Indicator EN16:

Total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight.

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Greenhouse gas emissions have been identified as the main cause of climate change.
This indicator, by measuring the combination of direct and indirect emissions, can provide insight into the potential cost implications of taxation or trading systems.

What is the current situation?

During the 2007-2008 reporting period Council has emitted a total of 24,515 tonnes of CO2-e. This is indirect emissions only as Council has no direct emissions.

Council incorrectly reported on this indicator last year. As a result trend information is not yet available.

Through improvements to the Data Management System, Council has improved its ability to track consumption with increased accuracy, allowing consumption at all facilities to be recorded.

What is the desired trend?

A reduction in the quantity of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from Council sites.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?

Reducing Councils energy consumption will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and subsequent impacts on climate change.
