Why use this indicator?Appropriate management of impacts on biodiversity can influence factors such as damage to the organisation's reputation, fines or rejection of planning or operating permissions. This indicator enables stakeholders to analyse how well Council’s strategies, current actions and future plans address potential impacts on biodiversity. What is the current situation?A Biodiversity Action Plan was endorsed by Council in December 2007 to implement the Biodiversity Strategy. The Biodiversity Action Plan prioritises actions required to implement the Biodiversity Strategy to improve the management of Penrith's biodiversity value and increase knowledge internally within Council. The development of the Action Plan is a step forward, however further work is required to fully satisfy this Indicator. Council's Biodiversity Strategy outlines a range of objectives to protect and manage Penrith's Biodiversity. The Biodiversity Action Plan provides specific actions to implement the strategic objectives of the Penrith Biodiversity Strategy. A Biodiversity Working Group has been established with representatives from various Council departments to monitor and review the implementation of the Plan and to facilitate internal training and awareness programs. Council continues to lobby relevant State agencies in relation to the conservation of bushland. Penrith hosted the first of a series of local government biodiversity cluster meetings which will facilitate information sharing between local and state government agencies. The biodiversity cluster group will be used to encourage state agencies to secure Plans of Management for key bushland reserves in the City. What is the desired trend? An increase in the area of high biodiversity value conserved and managed by Plans of Management or through private vegetation management agreements. What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council? The conservation, management and rehabilitation of core areas of biodiversity is essential for the overall health of the City's natural and social communities and needs to be managed in partnership with all levels of government, businesses and the community.
