sustainable penrith indicators

Sustainability Indicators

Principle 4:

Enable communities to minimise their ecological footprint

Indicator EN1:

Materials used by weight or volume

2006/2007 Data

Why use this indicator?

Tracking material consumption can facilitate monitoring of material efficiency and highlight direct costs of materials. This indicator outlines Council’s contribution to conservation of the global resource base and provides an opportunity to track our resource consumption.

What is the current situation?

Total consumption of construction materials for 2007-2008 was 51,271 tonnes

2007-2008 is the first year Council has reported on this indicator, so there is no trend.

Data has only been collated on construction materials. Data collation on other consumables is required for future reports.

What is the desired trend?

A reduction in the level of waste generated and improved data collection on waste generation.

What does this mean for the Sustainability of Penrith Council?

High levels of waste generation is unsustainable particularly with an increasing population and decreasing space in landfill sites. Tracking resource consumption is a key step in investigating opportunities for reducing the quantity of materials used and recycling and reusing waste products.
