Hello All!
“I’m bored!” “There’s nothing to do!” Does this sound familiar to you? These are the words I’m dreading from my ten year old son in the upcoming summer holidays!
Here at Penrith Library we have a few solutions to summer boredom. Reading is the first one. Reading will not only entertain your children in the hot summer days, it will also keep your children prepared for school next year. There is strong evidence that children will partially lose their reading abilities if they don’t practice their reading skills during long school breaks. To encourage your children to read, simply follow and build on their interests. For instance, my son is interested in space, science experiments, origami, cartooning and how different things work. I just borrow books on these topics for him—you can do the same. Do your children like sharks, trucks, dinosaurs, or perhaps fairies, mermaids and art & craft to make cool things? Talk to your children to find out about their interests and borrow fiction and non-fiction books from your local library. Once your children start reading, encourage them to enter our Summer Reading Competition for the chance to win gift vouchers.
Come into the Library and join up your children so that they can get their own membership cards. Library membership opens a whole new world of reading and entertainment to them, all of which is free. If you live, work or go to school in the Penrith Council area, library membership is free. Just bring in some ID with your current address and your children can start their reading journey right away!
The second solution is holiday activities for children under 13 years old. These activities are run at very affordable prices . Professional presenters are hired, all of whom have excelled in their field of entertainment, and are accredited with the Department of Education and have gone through an assessment to work with children.
For the January holidays, children can enjoy a magic show, a puppet show and science and clay workshops.
Our regular sessions of Preschool Storytime and Toy Library will be back in school terms next year. Storytime sessions are free and full of songs, stories and craft. For session times please check our website or phone us on 4732 7891.
Our suburb name series are continuing, this time it’s Berkshire Park - near Llandilo.
Why not make the most of your local public libraries, particularly in times of economic recession?
Have a safe and healthy festive season!
