Do I need Council approval for minor structures or alterations to my house?

A.

Certain types of minor developments, such as some garden sheds, fences etc, may be considered "exempt development" and don't need council approval if they comply with the requirements. Formore information on exempt development click here

I want to run a business from home - what do I need to do?

A.

Penrith City Council is supportive of Home Based Business. There are some guidelines relating to what types of businesses can and can't operate in residential areas. To find out more please contact the duty Town Planner on (02)4732 7991

Q.

What is a construction certificate and do I need one?

A.

A Construction Certificate is a certificate that states that building work can commence on an approved development, and that it complies with the terms of the consent and the Building Code of Australia. You must have development consent to obtain a construction certificate.  Click here for more information on Construction Certificates.

 

Q.

 What is the difference between getting a construction certificate through Council or someone else?

A.

You can nominate either Council or a private certifier to oversee the construction of a development and/or certify stages of the construction phase.  Click herefor more information regarding PCA's

 

Q.

What is an occupation certificate?

A.

An occupation certificate, issues under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 allows a person to occupy and use a new building or change the use of an existing building. For more information on Occupation Certificatesclick here.

Can I get a rebate for a rainwater tank?

A.

Q.

Is my land located in a bush fire prone area?

A.

Some areas of Penrith are located within bush fire prone areas.  You can view the bush fire prone land map at Council's offices (Penrith or St Marys) or on Council's websiteclick here  

Further information on building in a bush fire prone area may also be obtained from the Rural Fire Service at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au

 

Q.

Can I carry out backyard burning?

A.

No. Backyard burning is prohibited throughout the Penrith area including rural areas. For more information please click here

Do you have a plan of my sewerage pipes?

A.

No. Sydney Water have this information and can be contacted on 13 20 92 or atwww.sydneywater.com.au

 

Q.

Is approval required for a wood heater?

A.

Yes, wood heaters require Council approval under Section 68 of the Local Government Act. You must obtain an approval before installing the heater. Before you buy a wood heater you should consider the alternatives. Click here to go to our wood heater page
